Tesco to donate unsold food to The Battersea Canteen

This year we started a partnership with a fantastic charity, Be Enriched and launched The Battersea Canteen. The Canteen is open once a week on Tuesday evenings and anyone can come and enjoy a three course meal made out of surplus food for free.

Food waste is a huge problem in the UK - it's estimated that over 89 million tonnes of food are wasted every year in the EU, with the UK cited as the worst offender accounting for over 12 million tonnes. Implications are not just social or economic, the global carbon footprint of wasted food has been estimated as more than twice the greenhouse gas emissions of all road transportation in the US in 2010. Morrison's recently paved the way for change in the UK by becoming the UK's first supermarket to donate all it's surplus food to charity. Other initiatives like Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's War on Waste campaign have also helped highlight the massive issue that needs to be addressed.

The Canteen is not just about reducing food waste - it's open to anyone on a low income or in need of company. Approximately 19.3 million people in the UK experienced poverty between 2010 and 2013** and 51% of all people aged 75 and over live alone.***

Our Tuesday night get-togethers are an opportunity to bring the local community together, meet new people and eat for free once a week. We're doing our bit in our small corner of Battersea and are proud to say that we now have Tesco onboard to donate food to the Canteen. Other partners include FoodCloud, Co-op, Flour and our very own LCP resident chefs.

Our volunteers cook up an absolute storm in the kitchen each week so do come down and join us!

Caroline from St Marks said it has given the locals not only the opportunity to get to know each other, but also the chance to get out for a yummy meal once a week, which otherwise most residents probably couldn't afford to do on such a regular basis. The staff, food and atmosphere were fab."

- A happy customer Every Tuesday
